Take Action! Be part of the solution! If the telephone companies plans sounds like a bad deal to you, Take Action by contacting your state legislators now!

Let them know that you oppose the phone company's special interest legislation. Tell them that all providers of cable service should be required to provide cable TV under the rules on the books today . . . rules that were designed to serve the individual needs of each local community.

Help us by contacting your state legislators now.

AT&T wants a bill that would strip local government of authority over consumer protections, right-of-way, and access to services. Mayors, City Councils and County Commissions across the state agree this bill is bad for consumers. Both the Tennessee Municipal League and Tennessee County Services oppose the concept.

The current process has been in place for over 50 years and allows providers to develop franchise agreements that protect consumers by ensuring access and quality; consumers can call their local governments to get help with service they believe is inadequate. This process requires cable providers to build our networks and systems comprehensively throughout communities to make sure all citizens have fair access to services. AT&T could compete today by applying with any local government in Tennessee – but it wants to establish a better and less expensive set of rules for itself. By passing this law they want, AT&T would be expressly relieved of requirements to make service and competition for all.
